Is this any way to pick a president? Chapter 163

Mar 28, 2012, 3:52 PM | Updated: Jun 4, 2012, 4:54 pm

A new poll released this week once again demonstrates the challenges we face as a nation.

Mitt Romney, the presumptive Republican nominee, has a 50 percent “unfavorable” rating amongst adults and it inches up to 52 percent when you whittle it down to registered voters.

Not to be outdone, President Obama’s negative numbers have bounced around in the high 40s for a while now, which leads me to the conclusion that 50 percent of this country disagrees with you. On everything.

Quick, name a political topic and I can provide data showing how the American public is split down age, religious, geographical and ethnic lines. It doesn’t give moderates much hope for the future knowing that regardless of who is elected (or re-elected) come November, their first day in office will come with a hearty handshake and a 50 percent disapproval rating.

For those of us who believe in an America that is diverse in everything, including opinion, why must some cling so fervently to a political ideology that prevents any person, regardless of party, from breaking through? Are we doomed to a never ending cycle of the 51 percent shoving it down the throats of the 49 percent or will someone stand up and lead all of us into the future?

Stop laughing — a boy can dream.

We want to hear from you.
