Familiar foe to challenge Joe Arpaio for Maricopa County sheriff job

PHOENIX — A familiar face will be challenging Sheriff Joe Arpaio for his job next year.

Dan Saban, who has tried and failed twice to unseat Arpaio, has filed to run again for Maricopa County sheriff in 2016.

Saban, former Buckeye chief of police, filed the necessary paperwork this week.

He ran against Arpaio in 2004, in the Republican primary and lost by a little more than 27,000 votes.

In 2008, Saban switched party affiliation, and as Democrat lost to Arpaio in the general election by about 172,000 votes.

Arpaio, 82, has been in office since 1993.
