In this photo, Mount Raung spews volcanic material into the air as seen from Songgon in Indonesia’s East Java province. Wind was dispersing ash from five volcanoes that were rumbling Thursday across the archipelago, especially Raung and Mount Sinabung in North Sumatra province. Local volcanologist Kristianto said smoke from Sinabung reached a height of 1.5 kilometers (about 9 miles). The ash from Raung and Sinabung forced authorities to close domestic airports in Leuser and Tapak Tuan of North Sumatra as well as in Malang town of East Java province. Scientists say the five simultaneous eruptions are not unusual in a nation with about 130 active volcanoes.
