ELIZABETH, N.J. (AP) — A mail truck struck a woman crossing a street with two of her grandchildren, killing a toddler and injuring the others, authorities said.
The grandmother was carrying the 2-year-old around 10:30 a.m. Monday in Elizabeth when the truck hit them, sending the girl into the air, witnesses told investigators. The child was taken to a hospital, where she was pronounced dead a short time later.
The woman and the other child, who is 4 years old, were being treated at a hospital for undisclosed injuries.
Andres Figueroa told NJ.com that he saw the girl fly out of the woman’s arms after impact.
“I never expect to see something like that, a kid flying,” he said. “It’s unbelievable.”
No charges have been filed, and the crash remains under investigation, officials said. The driver of the mail truck remained at the scene and apparently was not injured, authorities said.
The postal service issued a statement saying it was conducting “a full investigation.”
The names of the woman and the children weren’t immediately released.
