Netanyahu, British FM spar over Iran deal disagreements

JERUSALEM (AP) — Israel’s prime minister and the British foreign secretary have publicly sparred over the deal on Iran’s nuclear program.
Speaking to journalists ahead of a private meeting Thursday, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and British Foreign Secretary Philip Hammond veered off prepared remarks to argue over the Iran deal.
Netanyahu, a staunch critic of the agreement, said the deal’s failure to address Iran’s calls to annihilate Israel was “perplexing.” In a retort, Hammond said the deal is limited to Iran’s nuclear activities.
Netanyahu got in the last word, criticizing the deal’s gradual lifting of sanctions, saying it would allow Iran to foment “more terrorism.” Hammond said the conversation would continue during their meeting.
The spat comes a day after Hammond told the British Parliament that Israel wants a “permanent standoff” with Iran.
