MASCOTTE, Fla. (AP) — A central Florida sheriff’s deputy fatally shot a man who authorities say pointed an assault rifle at him during a home invasion.
The Orlando Sentinel (http://tinyurl.com/qyn6akb) reports several family members and children were inside the mobile home during Tuesday’s burglary. One man was pistol-whipped and another was shot in the hand, although it’s not clear whether the bullet came from burglars or authorities.
Lake County Sheriff’s Cpl. Fred Jones says a woman inside the house called 911 and said men with guns were inside. When deputies arrived, a man came out the door and pointed a rifle at a deputy. The deputy fired, hitting the man.
Jones says Chacarion Avant, 20, was declared dead at the hospital.
The victim who was pistol-whipped was treated at the hospital and released.
Authorities say they captured a suspected accomplice, Richard Charles McNeal, during a daylong manhunt, but a second remains at large. McNeal is being charged with murder because authorities said he was involved in a felony when Avant was killed.
