Report on immigration detainers declined, at a glance

LOS ANGELES (AP) — A government report released Monday shows more than 1,800 immigrants who federal agents sought to deport were nevertheless released from local jails and later re-arrested for various crimes.

The Immigration and Customs Enforcement report — which covers the immigration detainers that were declined between January and August 2014 — was obtained and released by the Center for Immigration Studies, an organization that actively opposes illegal immigration.

Immigration detainers are requests to hold individuals for up to 48 hours until federal immigration agents can take them into custody for deportation proceedings.

Here are some more statistics from the report:

–Immigration detainers were declined for 8,145 people during the eight months. About 37 percent of them, or 2,984, had been previously charged or convicted of a felony.

–The counties where the biggest numbers of detainers were declined were Santa Clara, Los Angeles, Alameda and San Diego counties in California, and Miami-Dade County in Florida.

–Detention facilities declining large numbers of detainers included Santa Clara County Jail in San Jose, California; Santa Rita Jail in Dublin, California; Twin Towers Correctional Facility in Los Angeles and Vista Detention Facility in San Diego.

–Other places where detainers are not honored were county jails in Colorado and the North Dakota State Penitentiary.

–After their initial detainers were declined, 1,867 people were arrested again on a total of 7,491 charges. Ten percent of the charges were for drugs and 7 percent were for drunken driving.
