MEXICO CITY (AP) — The Mexican army says it has seized more than $11.5 million dollars in cash found aboard a truck carrying strawberries south from the U.S. border.
It says the U.S. currency was found in 306 bundles wrapped in black tape.
It was found Monday after a gamma-ray inspection of the truck at a customs checkpoint a few miles from Sonoyta, just across the border from Lukeville, Arizona. The driver was detained.
Tuesday’s army statement doesn’t say where the cash may have come from, but Mexican drug cartels often repatriate large amounts of U.S. bills from drug sales, often in relatively small denominations.
