BAGHDAD (AP) — A series of bombings in Iraq, including a car bombing in Baghdad and a town south of the Iraqi capital, killed 16 people on Thursday, officials said.
No one immediately claimed responsibility for the attacks. Iraq sees near-daily bombings and other attacks that often claimed by Islamic State group, which seized large swath of the country following a stunning blitz last year
The deadliest attack took place late Thursday when a car bomb exploded near a line of restaurants and cafes in Baghdad’s southeastern Shiite suburbs of Zafaraniya, killing seven people and wounding 18. Several cafes and restaurants were damaged in the attack.
Separately in the same suburb, a sticky bomb attached to a pickup truck carrying Shiite militiamen exploded and killed two militiamen.
Earlier in the day, a blast at a commercial street in Baghdad’s western district of Bayaa killed three people and wounded nine. And a bomb near an outdoor market killed two people in Baghdad’s western al-Furat suburb.
A bomb also went off near a cafe on Thursday night in the town of Madain, just south of Baghdad, killing two people and wounding 11, officials said.
All officials spoke on condition of anonymity because they are not authorized to talk to reporters.
