Woman tries to hit constable during Short Creek evictions

HILDALE, Utah (AP) — Forced evictions are causing growing tension among the polygamous Short Creek community that straddles the Utah-Arizona border.

The Spectrum of St. George reports (http://bit.ly/1NWIQue) that local officials say a woman there attempted to run over a constable after he questioned her on Tuesday.

The constable was trying to enforce 10 eviction notices served in May by a trust called the United Effort Plan, which owns most of the land in the twin towns of Hildale, Utah, and Colorado City, Arizona.

UEP employee Isaac Wyler says the woman was sitting in a van outside a house and he and the constable were trying to determine if she lived there. She wouldn’t speak to them.

Wyler says the constable walked in front of the van and the woman hit the gas but spun out on the gravel.
