PHOENIX — Former Arizona Secretary of State Ken Bennett is taking another run at public office.

Bennett said he will move to the private sector after serving his last day as a liaison to the Arizona Supreme Court on Friday.

“That will allow me the flexibility to be getting in the race for Congressional District 1,” he said.

The Arizona high court does not allow employees to run for office.

Bennett said he was not planning to announce his candidacy so soon.

“It’s kind of turned into an announcement before the announcement,” he said, adding he expects to officially declare his candidacy within the week.

Bennett was first to file for the Republican gubernatorial primary last year. He lost to Gov. Doug Ducey.

The 1st District is currently headed by Rep. Ann Kirkpatrick (D-Arizona). She won the district in a tightly-contested race against former Arizona House Speaker Andy Tobin.

Kirkpatrick will leave her seat open when she runs for Senate.
