PHOENIX — Gov. Doug Ducey recognized Thursday two Arizonans who helped the United States Women’s National Soccer Team win the 2015 World Cup.
Ducey recognized centerback Julie Johnston and forward Sydney Leroux, both of whom represented the state in the World Cup.
The Mesa-born Johnston grew up playing soccer for Gilbert Arsenal Soccer Club, and later attended Dobson High School, though she never played for the school team. Instead, she played for Sereno Soccer Club.
Johnston started every game for the team during their seven-game run, which ended with a 5-2 win over Japan on Sunday. She also earned player of the match in the United States 1-0 win over Nigeria on June 16.
Leroux was born in Canada and moved to Seattle at 13, then to Scottsdale. She attended Horizon High School and also played for Sereno.
The forward played in four World Cup games, including the United States 2-0 win over Germany in the semi-final.
