PHOENIX — The bodies of a missing 12-year-old boy and his grandfather have been found on an Arizona hiking trail.
Maricopa County Sheriff’s Office said Wednesday that Robert Miller and his grandfather, Thomas Gillespie, 63, had been hiking near Gila Bend, about 50 miles south of Phoenix.
Searchers found Gillespie’s body about 5 miles from the Mormon Battalion trailhead where their vehicle was parked and the boy’s body about 1.5 miles from the trailhead.
The two had not been heard from since Tuesday morning, when they left for a hike at the Sonoran Desert National Monument, the Prescott Daily Courier reported.
Authorities said a hotel manager where the family was staying told them he saw Gillespie, of Tucson, and Miller, from the Prescott area, leaving and thought they were going to Mormon Battalion Trail.
Their vehicle was found Wednesday around 5:30 p.m.
Cause of their deaths has not been determined.
