PHOENIX — Peoria firefighters rescued seven baby quail Monday after a firefighter climbed into a storm drain to scoop them out.
The chicks were attempting to cross a street when a car shot by, causing the family to go into a frenzy and run into the drain. Residents who witnessed the incident tried to hoist them out but to no avail.
The fire station was contacted and firefighter Matt Gingras climbed into the manhole to save the frightened quail.
The family was then reunited and released back into the wild.
One of the residents who watched the situation unfold, retired police officer Lee North, sent a commendation letter to the city, saying they went “above and beyond the call of duty.”
