TEMPE, Ariz. — Former Congressman Ed Pastor was giving $1 million of unused
campaign funds to Arizona State University to establish a center to encourage
political engagement among students and the broader community.
The university said the Ed Pastor Center for Politics and Public Service will
provide students with hands-on experience through internships, participation in
political forums and meetings with elected officials.
The center will be part of the College of Public Service and Community
Solutions. Dean Jonathan Koppell called Pastor, an ASU graduate, a living example of using public
office to improve communities.
Pastor was first elected to the U.S. House of Representatives in 1991. He
retired from Congress in January.
Before serving in Congress, Pastor taught high school chemistry, helped direct
a community nonprofit and served on the Maricopa County Board of Supervisors.
