In this photo by Gemunu Amarasinghe, students participate in a ceremony to commemorate the 53rd anniversary of a student uprising in Yangon, Myanmar. The military government led by dictator Gen. Ne Win brutally suppressed the 1962 uprising at Yangon University, killing dozens of students in the crackdown that culminated with troops blowing up the historic student union building. The university has produced many of Myanmar’s most famous dissidents and intellectuals, but it was closed repeatedly for long stretches under the military junta, which saw urban campuses as hotbeds of political dissent. About 30 students took part in the unauthorized gathering Tuesday morning, watched closely by police, though the gathering appeared to end without incident.
