Autopsies set for couple, son found dead in 2 homes in Maine

Jul 6, 2015, 9:00 AM

BOOTHBAY HARBOR, Maine (AP) — Authorities hope autopsies being performed on a couple and their adult son will shed light Monday on their deaths in separate homes in a coastal town.

The bodies of Svend Jorgensen, 71, and his wife, Carol Jorgensen, 75, were discovered Saturday in their home in Boothbay Harbor, a popular summer tourist spot. The body of their son, 40-year-old Eric Jorgensen, was found at his home.

Stephen McCausland, a spokesman for the Maine Department of Public Safety, said investigators do not believe anyone else was involved. He said more information about the manner and cause of the deaths could be released Monday after the medical examiner completes autopsies.

The bodies were discovered after a well-being check at the couple’s home.

Friends and neighbors tell the Portland Press-Herald (http://bit.ly/1LSbFum) that the family was well-known in the community.

Tony Heyl, a jewelry store owner in Boothbay Harbor, called the family “pillars of the community” and said he was shocked to hear of their deaths.

“All of them were really delightful people, very bright, very industrious,” Heyl said.

Eric Jorgensen taught social studies at Catherine McAuley High School in Portland. School officials have notified parents of his death and are offering any help to students and their families.

Svend Jorgensen, a native of Denmark, retired last year after working as an engineer for nearly 28 years at Bath Iron Works, the newspaper reported.

A family friend said Carol Jorgensen had worked at the Portland International Jetport.

Their son had recently moved into a home previously owned by his grandmother, Gladys Pratt, who died last year.
