An 8-year-old has drowned in the Verde River southeast of Camp Verde, according to the Yavapai County Sheriff’s Office.
The initial report to the police was from an uninvolved third party that said a teenager was swimming in the river and had disappeared. Deputies immediately coordinated the assistance and sent out their Swift Water Rescue Team.
The team found the boy at the river bottom 45 minutes after the dispatch. The boy was brought out of the water with no signs of life and was pronounced dead.
The 8-year-old’s uncle was interviewed and said that they had come to the river to look at some caves up on the cliff.
The two had been swimming across the river to look at the caves. The uncle was carrying the boy on his shoulders, stepped in a deep hole, and both of them went underwater. The uncle swam to shore and came back to find his nephew, but could not reach him.
