Recalls this week: Beats portable speakers, water heaters

Beats speakers are being recalled because they can overheat and potentially cause a fire. Other consumer products being recalled this week include hanging chairs and water heaters.

Here’s a more detailed look:

VITAMIN CHEWS

DETAILS: Bariatric Fusion Soft Chews that come in a resalable bag. The recalled vitamins have the lot number 14191C2 near the bottom of the bag. They were sold for $23 at wellness centers around the country and online at BariatricFusion.com, BariatricChoice.com and DietDirect.com from September 2014 to February 2015. They have 60 chews in each bag.

WHY: The packaging is not child-proof and the iron inside the chews could cause serious injury or death to a child if they eat many of them.

INCIDENTS: None reported.

HOW MANY: About 800.

BIG LOTS HANGING CHAIRS

DETAILS: Egg-shaped hanging chairs sold at Big Lots stores. They were made from brown plastic wicker pattern mesh and have red seat cushions. They hang from a chain connected to a black metal pole and U-shaped base. They were sold from December 2014 through January 2015 for about $300.

WHY: The hanging chairs can tip over when they face sideways and swing beyond the base, posing the risk of a fall.

INCIDENTS: Eight reports of the hanging chairs falling in stores with consumers in them. Five reports of minor injuries.

HOW MANY: About 16,000.

CREED LED REPLACEMENT TUBES

DETAILS: Cree LED T8 lamps used indoors to replace traditional two pin fluorescent tubes. The white lamps have a cylindrical shape and measure 48 inches long. The affected units are marked as “BT848 Series Lamp.” There are several products and UPC numbers associated with the recall; see them at: http://www.cpsc.gov/en/Recalls/2015/Cree-Recalls-LED-Lamps .

WHY: May overheat and melt, posting a risk of a burn.

INCIDENTS: Four reports of the lamps overheating and melting. No injuries have been reported.

HOW MANY: About 700,000 in the U.S. and 11,500 in Canada.

BEATS SPEAKERS

DETAILS: Beats Pill XL wireless speakers. The small “b” Beats logo is on the grille and “beatspillXL” is on the handle. The speakers come in five colors black, white, pink, metallic sky and titanium. They were sold at Apple Stores and other stores nationwide and online at Apple.com and Beatsbydre.com from January 2014 through June 2015.

WHY: The battery can overheat, posing a fire hazard.

INCIDENTS: Eight reports of incidents of the speakers overheating, including one with a burn to a consumer’s finger and one with damage to a consumer’s desk.

HOW MANY: About 222,000 in the U.S. and about 11,000 in Canada.

WATER HEATERS

DETAILS: John Wood brand 50 and 70 gallon oil-fired water heaters. The 50 gallon water heaters have model number JW517 and serial numbers from 1349A021678 through 1503A016643. The 70 gallon water heaters have model number JW717 and serial numbers from 1421M001517 through 436M000040. The water heaters are gray with “John Wood” printed in blue and white near the top. The model number, size and serial numbers are printed on the rating plate near the top of the tank. Only oil-fired water heaters are included in this recall. They were sold by John Wood sales representatives to plumbers and consumers from January 2014 through March 2015. They sold for about $1,500 to $2,500.

WHY: The water heater’s combustion chamber can be misaligned and heat the exterior walls of the water heater instead of the water. That could cause items around the water heater to catch fire.

INCIDENTS: None reported.

HOW MANY: About 250.

EMERGENCY BEACONS

DETAILS: Ortovox S1+ Avalanche Transceiver, which is used as a beacon to locate an individual in the event of avalanche burial. ORTOVOX and S1+ are printed on the top of the device. In the open/receive position the top half of the transceiver displays a blue screen with green border that displays an image and distance reading of the buried individual. The transceivers measure about 5 inches long by 3 inches wide by 1 inch thick in the closed/transmit position. All transceivers made from 2010 through 2014 are included in the recall. The manufactured date is printed inside the battery door on the back of the transceiver with a roman numeral representing the quarter of the year and a two digit number referring to the year. They were sold at outdoor specialty retailers, ski shops and directly nationwide. They sold for about $490.

WHY: The device may not be able to transmit a signal during an emergency, even if it appears to be powered on.

INCIDENTS: None reported.

HOW MANY: About 3,000.
