Beyond the stars: NASA flies high with 50 years of spacewalks

Fifty years after the first float, walking in space remains a wondrous feat.

NASA is reminding us all of the awesomeness of that inaugural adventure Wednesday with a documentary posted online in celebration.

Astronaut Ed White was the first American to do so June 3, 1965 on the Gemini IV mission. The extravehicular activity lasted 23 minutes, during which White lost a glove. Teammate and flight commander James McDivitt filmed the walk.

Hollywood has offered its own moments of spacewalks. Let’s remember some of them.
