The latest on Boston Marathon case: Officer likely shot cop

A Massachusetts prosecutor says it’s “highly likely” that friendly fire critically injured a police officer during a gunbattle with the Boston Marathon bombers days after the attacks.
But Middlesex District Attorney Marian Ryan said Tuesday that whatever wounded Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority Officer Richard Donohue remains in his body and can’t be examined to confirm. Her office’s report concluded the gunfire was justified.
The gunfight took place days after bombs exploded at the 2013 marathon, killing three people and injuring over 260.
One of bombers, Tamerlan Tsarnaev (TAM’-ehr-luhn tsahr-NEYE’-ehv), was killed. His brother, Dzhokhar (joh-HAHR’), was eventually captured. A jury decided he should be sentenced to death.
The Massachusetts Emergency Management Agency concluded in a separate report that officers showed a lack of “weapons discipline,” resulting in dangerous crossfire.

A college friend of Boston Marathon bomber Dzhokhar Tsarnaev (joh-HAHR’ tsahr-NEYE’-ehv) has been sentenced to six years in prison for impeding the investigation into the 2013 attacks.
Dias Kadyrbayev (DY’-us kah-dur-BY’-ehv) apologized to the bombing victims and their families at his sentencing hearing Tuesday, saying he is ashamed he didn’t call police when he recognized photos of Tsarnaev as a suspect.
Kadyrbayev pleaded guilty last year to obstruction of justice and conspiracy charges for removing items from Tsarnaev’s dorm room after recognizing his friend in photos released by the FBI days after the bombing.
He had faced up to seven years in prison.
Kadyrbayev told the judge Tuesday: “I really can’t believe that I acted so stupidly.”
Three people were killed and more than 260 were injured in the bombing.

A Massachusetts prosecutor has scheduled a news conference to discuss her office’s investigation into the April 2013 shootout that left one of the Boston Marathon bombers dead and nearly killed a police officer.
Middlesex District Attorney Marian Ryan is scheduled to make a statement Tuesday regarding the investigation.
The armed confrontation in suburban Watertown on April 19, 2013 ended with the death of bomber Tamerlan Tsarnaev (TAM’-ehr-luhn tsahr-NEYE’-ehv) and left MBTA Officer Richard Donohue clinging to life after getting shot. Donohue only returned to work last month.
The shootout was four days after two pressure-cooker bombs exploded at the marathon finish line, killing three people and injuring more than 260.
Tamerlan Tsarnaev died after getting run over by his brother, Dzhokhar (joh-HAHR’), who was sentenced to death last month.
