Forbes is known for releasing annual lists of the most wealthy people, sometimes even looking for distinct categories to rank each person in.
The business magazine’s newest list is something it’s never done before: ranking the U.S.’ 50 most successful, self-made women by their net worths.
A few of the women are instantly recognizable, such as artists, fashion designers and TV personalities. However, most on the list fly under the radar, more or less, and won’t be familiar to the general public.
Forbes notes 20 of the 50 successful women reside in California, while New York City is home to eight.
Celebrities such as Jessica Alba, Sandra Bullock and Taylor Swift fell just short of making the cut.
Coming in third overall was Gap co-founder Doris Fisher, with a net worth of $3.1 billion. Diane Hendricks, co-founder and chair of ABC Supply (a wholesale distributor of roofing and siding materials and tools), placed second with $3.7 billion. And in first was Elizabeth Holmes, founder and CEO of Theranos (a health technology and medical laboratory services company), with a net worth of $4.5 billion.
Below are a few of the faces on the list that you might recognize without any introduction:
