PHOENIX — A Phoenix-area principal was stung 10 times by bees that were attacking students on Wednesday, a fire official said.
Principal Art Velarde was trying to help the students at the Pueblo Elementary School playground near Hayden Road and McDonald Drive.
Scottsdale Fire Department Division Chief Jay Ducote said nine students were stung.
“One of the students has a history of having a reaction to bees, so we took him to the hospital as a precaution,” he said.
The children were between 5 and 8 years old.
A beekeeper was called to remove the insects. Ducote said about 20,000 bees were found in a nearby irrigation box.
