PHOENIX — The City of Phoenix is honoring its fallen police officers and firefighters this Memorial Day with its annual “Hero Lanes.”

The city will be posting banners of all 48 of Phoenix’s fallen public safety personnel on street lights along its roadways.

Phoenix Police Chief Joseph Yahner said it’s a nice tribute to the men and women who gave their lives in the line of duty.

“You can never remember a fallen officer enough,” said Yahner said.

This will be the second time the city has posted the 7-foot tall street light banners.

According to City Councilman Michael Nowakowski, last year the banners were only placed along Baseline Road, but this year they’ll also be put up along Washington Street.

The banners will be installed between 35th and 51st Avenue on Baseline Road, as well as between 7th Street and 9th Avenue on Washington Street.

“We started off in my district, District 7, and now we have it in Central Phoenix,” Nowakowski said. “Hopefully next year we can have it on the west side, east side and north side of our city.”

Along with these banners, Phoenix will host its annual Star Spangled Celebration in remembrance of the 48 fallen officers and firefighters.

The event will take place on Friday, May 22 at Cesar Chavez Park. It will be open to the public with a start time of 5 p.m.

We want to hear from you.
