Rising Phoenix-area temperatures can prove fatal for pets

PHOENIX — The Phoenix area may have enjoyed a brief cold snap over the weekend, but the Arizona Humane Society is warning the coming summer highs could prove fatal for pets.

“Keep in mind if it’s hot for us, it is very hot for our pets,” Bretta Nelson with the organization said.

Each year, emergency animal medical technicians receive calls about pets with third-degree burns or overheated animals.

“Follow the tips: keep pets indoors, keep them hydrated, make sure they have shade, never chain them and never leave them in a car,” Nelson said.

For outdoor animals, Nelson said it’s crucial owners provide plenty of shade and water. A large dog can consume about five gallons of water. Also, chains of any kind should be avoided.

“These cases can result in animal cruelty charges,” she said.
