Armed man dies after confrontation with Mesa police

PHOENIX — A confrontation between an armed man and Mesa police ended with the man shot dead and officers unsure how.
Police said they had received calls about gunshots heard near Broadway Road and Mesa Drive on Tuesday night around 10 p.m.
The man had forced a couple from their apartment, but they were unharmed.
By the time police arrived, the man was outside, holding a gun to his head. He fired a shot into the air and an officer fired at him once before the man ran off to a side yard.
Officers said they heard another shot and found the man dead.
