PHOENIX — A student shot and killed himself Tuesday morning at Corona del Sol High School in Tempe, police said.
The boy was seen in a breezeway on campus holding a weapon to his head shortly before 9 a.m.
School officials called police immediately while the school resource officer attempted to talk the student down.
“The officer began talking with him, trying to tell him to not hurt himself, asking him not to do anything,” Lt. Mike Pooley said, adding the officer is specially trained to work with students.
The school at Rural Road near Ray Road was locked down immediately.

Though police said no one else was at risk, the school was shutdown for the day. A baseball playoff game was moved from Tuesday to Wednesday.
Students will be offered counseling.
