Weekend Phoenix-area freeway restrictions for May 1-4

May 1, 2015, 5:51 AM | Updated: 5:51 am

Several freeway closures and restrictions will impact traffic in the greater Phoenix area this weekend.

The Arizona Department of Transportation announced the following changes to freeway traffic for May 1-4:

• Eastbound Interstate 10 toward Tucson will be narrowed to one lane between Chandler Boulevard and Queen Creek Road from 10 p.m. Friday to noon Saturday. Additionally, the eastbound I-10 on-ramp at Wild Horse Pass Boulevard will be closed during the same time. ADOT recommended using eastbound I-10 on-ramps at Queen Creek Road or Chandler Boulevard while Wild Horse Pass Boulevard is closed.

• Westbound I-10 toward Phoenix will be narrowed to one lane between Riggs Road and Wild Horse Pass Boulevard from 10 p.m. Saturday to noon Sunday. ADOT said drivers should be prepared to slow down and merge safely when approaching the work zone.

• Westbound Loop 202 (Red Mountain Freeway) will be closed between Greenfield Road and Country Club Drive in Mesa from 10 p.m. Friday to 5 a.m. Monday for a freeway-widening project. ADOT said westbound US 60 can be used as an alternate route. Also, westbound Loop 202 traffic exiting at Greenfield Road can instead detour to westbound McKellips Road.

• Eastbound I-10 will be closed between Interstate 17 and State Route 51/Loop 202 from 9 p.m. Friday to 9 a.m. Saturday for tunnel cleaning and freeway maintenance. Also, the I-17 ramps to eastbound I-10 will be closed during the same time frame. Eastbound I-10 approaching the closure can detour on southbound I-17 and reconnect with I-10 near Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport.

• Westbound I-10 will be closed between I-17 near Sky Harbor airport and 27th Avenue — west of I-17 — from 9 p.m. Saturday to 9 a.m. Sunday for tunnel cleaning and freeway maintenance. Also, the westbound Loop 202 and southbound SR 51 ramps to westbound I-10 will be closed during the same span. ADOT said westbound I-10 traffic can detour on northbound I-17 near the airport and reconnect with I-10 at the stack interchange north of Van Buren Street.

• Country Club Drive will be closed in both directions at Loop 202 (Red Mountain Freeway) in Mesa from 5 a.m. to 5 p.m. Sunday for bridge work. Meanwhile, Loop 202 on- and off-ramps at Country Club Drive will remain open with only right turns allowed. ADOT said McKellips Road is a prime alternate route.

• Southbound I-17 will be narrowed to one lane between Jefferson Street and 19th Avenue from 9 p.m. Sunday to 5 a.m. Monday for pavement repairs. ADOT said alternate routes include eastbound I-10 in the downtown Phoenix area.
