The next time a recent college graduate complains about not getting hired, take a look at their attire.
According to Time, the primary reason that recent graduates are not being hired because they lack “soft skills” such as communication and dressing for an office environment.
A survey by the Workforce Solutions Group at St. Louis Community College finds that more than 60% of employers say applicants lack “communication and interpersonal skills” — a jump of about 10 percentage points in just two years. A wide margin of managers also say today’s applicants can’t think critically and creatively, solve problems or write well.
While colleges tend to put an emphasis on mastering the technical skills of an occupation, many companies told Time they prefer skills like teamwork and problem solving over abilities.
Internships are believed to help the problem, but even students who were able to get one are still unprepared for the workplace, businesses said.
