Justin Bieber has a bad rap in the media as of lately. But forget about all that for a moment — we know, it’s hard. Here’s proof he isn’t always a punk kid and actually has a kind heart.

The pop star tweeted a touching tribute to a young fan named Jake Schafer, 10, who recently passed away from neuroblastoma, a rare form a cancer most commonly found in young children.

“Heard little Jake is up in heaven,” he wrote. “The world lost a great kid but I’m grateful I got to meet him. RIP Jake.”

According to E! News, Bieber met the little guy back in 2011 as part of the Children’s Wish Foundation. The two Canadians hung out together and played hockey at the home of the Toronto Maple Leafs.

Jake struggled with the cancer for three years, before passing away on Tuesday.
