Super-jocks

Sports fans, like me, were treated to a dinner with very good company Saturday night.

It was an awards event put on annually by the House of Broadcasting, and this year turned out to be a tribute to that rarefied community of athletic supporters — a night in jock city.

At the head table with Jerry Colangelo and emcee Al McCoy were the honorees: Arizona Diamondbacks World Series hero Luis Gonzalez, TV sportscaster Jude LaCava and Phoenix Suns legend Dan Majerle.

Through their introductions and acceptance speeches, I was struck by how totally removed each was from the image of the self-serving, indulgent, swaggering superstar of each of their professions — Gonzalez, humbly growing up in his Cuban-American family; LaCava, the shy Italian-American kid from Ohio; and Majerle, whose name was famously booed by fans when the Suns picked him on draft day.

Tell your kids about these three stars who, at one time, weren’t wanted, and now Arizona couldn’t do without.

I’m Pat McMahon.
