Crack-up

Being the mayor of someplace is kind of a safe haven for politicians.

I mean, the mayors of most American towns do a lot of ribbon cutting and trophy presenting.

When you get to big cities with people like Bloomberg of New York, the Daleys of Chicago and yes, even Phoenix Mayor Greg Stanton, they have to deal with issues that affect a lot of people. For the most part, though, being mayor is a position without passion.

I always thought the supreme exception to that has been the city of San Diego.

Mayor Roger Hedgecock, accused of corruption and using illegal campaign funds, Mayor Maureen O’Conor, who used charity monies for her billion-dollar gambling debts and most recently, Mr. Sexual Harassment, Mayor Bob Filner.

But they all pale when compared to the current mayor of Canada’s largest city, Toronto, who this week, finally admitted that he was the one captured on video, smoking crack cocaine.

But he did offer a compelling excuse: He said he only did it because he didn’t know what he was doing since, at the time, he was in a drunken stupor.

Smoking crack, binge drinking for a man the size of Chris Christie’s house – here’s a shamed politician who may not even have to resign.

Just be patient, Toronto.
