Her name is Barbara McClintock and she just became an overnight world wide media personality, not as an entertainer, but as a coroner.
It was her job Monday to announce from the British Columbia Coroners Service the official cause of death of 31-year-old “Glee” actor Cory Monteith, who played Finn Hudson on the hit show.
If neither of those names is familiar, that’s too bad. I’ve been a “Glee” fan since the show started and I really liked the high school atmosphere that the show created — no more realistic than “West Side Story” was a movie about street gangs.
But it wasn’t sappy. Girls got pregnant, athletes were bullies and got bullied. Faculty members had their own problems. There were gay kids and straight kids and with just a little reach, just a little imagination, we believed a quarterback could sing and dance and play the drums. That was Finn Hudson — that was Cory Monteith, who had every reason to live, but the money and fame were not as important as heroin and alcohol.
And when you talk to your kids about him, remind them that in French, the word “fin” means the end.
I’m Pat McMahon.
