Final Word: Hoping de Blasio makes headlines for politics, not race

The new mayor of New York, Bill de Blasio, says he has a lot of changes in store for the city.

His family was a big part of his campaign, and his daughter coined a phrase about her dad, saying that he is not a “boring white guy.”

Her statement would simply be humorous, if it weren’t for the fact that his wife is black, making their children interracial. Their son appeared in many campaign ads that some credit with getting de Blasio the necessary support to win.

De Blasio has said he will stop the city’s controversial “stop and frisk” policy because it unfairly targets minorities.

The First Family of New York finally looks like a lot of families IN New York.

In fact, the de Blasios family shot and released their own version of the Cheerios ad that got attention for featuring an interracial family, according to Politicker.

That’s a good thing.

It will be an even better thing when families like the de Blasios don’t make headlines for their skin color, because their skin color is no longer noticed.

Chirlane McCray is de Blasio’s wife. She says her family took to Bill right away. And her biggest fear when they started dating? He was six years younger.

That’s great. And very real.

And as glad as I am that they are getting a little attention for their diversity, I hope it goes away soon, because there will be those who criticize him for “using” his family to get political or social points.

Of course de Blasio’s family influences his politics, but don’t you think his politics influenced his life choices, choices that eventually led him to the woman he loves?

You bet.

Hopefully, the de Blasios start to become LESS newsworthy, starting today.
