Samsung teaches Turkish town sign language to surprise deaf man

Mar 10, 2015, 10:54 PM | Updated: Apr 24, 2015, 8:05 pm

Imagine living life without being able to hear language at all — with no capacity to learn it — and only communicating with a handful of people. Imagine that was your reality from the time you first spoke until now.

That was Muhareem’s reality.

The deaf Turkish man could only speak with those who spoke sign language.

Samsung planned a surprise for him. Planning scenarios for interaction along with Muhareem’s sister, the company trained townspeople in sign language for several weeks and, one day, sent him out to run errands with his sister.

Using hidden cameras, they captured moments of surprised conversations with strangers everywhere — those he bumps into on the streets, a taxi driver, a bagel shop cashier and more.

The whole thing is meant to promote a call center for the deaf, which is advertised in a most touching way.
