This is creepy. So, so creepy.
According to the Boston Globe, a realistic statue at Wellesley College is getting all sorts of negative attention and for good reason.
The statue is of a sleepwalking man wearing nothing but his underwear. Oh, did I mention this is an all-women’s college?
The student body has complained about the statue and has filed a petition to get it removed.
“[T]his highly lifelike sculpture has, within just a few hours of its outdoor installation, become a source of apprehension, fear, and triggering thoughts regarding sexual assault for many members of our campus community,” says the petition, which was penned by student Lauren Walsh. “While it may appear humorous, or thought-provoking to some, it has already become a source of undue stress for many Wellesley College students, the majority of whom live, study, and work in this space.”
School officials said the statue is part of New Gravity, an art exhibit by sculptor Tony Matelli that is currently on display at the school’s Davis Museum. The museum’s director, Lisa Fischman, said the statue was placed by a roadway on campus to garner attention.
“We placed the Sleepwalker on the roadside just beyond the Davis to connect the exhibition — within the museum — to the campus world beyond,” Fischman wrote, also posting it on Change.org as her response to the petition. “I love the idea of art escaping the museum and muddling the line between what we expect to be inside (art) and what we expect to be outside (life).
Oh, it’s gotten a response alright. The entire Internet is now in fear of this statue popping up outside their window at 3 a.m.
