A firebug went on an arson spree between March 13 and March 17, 2014, setting eight fires in a retirement community near Ellsworth and Guadalupe in Mesa.

Phoenix Police Sgt. Darren Burch said the arsonist set fire to golf carts and carports, specifically, the lattices attached to the carports.

“And these were mobile homes,” Burch said. “We’re very fortunate that no one has died or that there wasn’t more property damage.”

Police don’t know if it was someone making mischief or a person with a burning grudge against the Las Palmas Grand community.

“Either way, this could’ve been a tinderbox where the fires could have absolutely killed people,” said Burch.

Next, a cold case from the homicide unit.

It was Monday, Sept. 27, 2004, just after 5 p.m. when Manuel Bracamontes was shot in the parking lot of the McDowell Apartments at 24th Street and McDowell Road.

“Witnesses saw [Bracamontes] chasing after and yelling at a car after he’d been shot,” said Burch.

The car was described as a blue or green Nissan Altima or Maxima. Bracamontes later died at the hospital.
