Police seek carjacking suspect in Tempe [RE-BROADCAST OF 2/25/13]

Dec 4, 2017, 5:00 AM

In Tempe, police are looking for a carjacker.

“This is someone who’s a coward. He definitely preys on the vulnerable,” said Phoenix Police Sgt. Darren Burch.

On Tuesday, Jan. 29, 2013, at about 6 p.m., a man wearing a white baseball cap and dark jacket tried to kidnap a 67-year-old woman at gunpoint in her vehicle. It was in the parking lot of the Walgreens at McClintock and Guadalupe. She fought him off and he fled.

Five minutes later, he struck again. This time carjacking a 71-year-old man in the Fry’s parking lot at Baseline and McClintock. The victim escaped and his vehicle was later found.

Police are searching for a serial arsonist.

“From January 2012 to February 2013, there have been 24 suspicious fires,” said Burch. “We’re talking vehicles, shrubs, trash dumpsters, garages. Almost anything out there has been set afire.”

The arsons happened in the area bordered by Adobe and McKellips from Gilbert to 26th Street. Many are connected to an alley, which leads investigators to believe that’s how the arsonist is getting away. So far, investigators haven’t been able to get any leads on a suspect.

“They haven’t really found any time pattern or date pattern as of yet but it’s averaging about two a month,” said Burch.

One thing’s for sure: This arsonist is creating some really dangerous situations and Burch said these types of criminals usually don’t stop until they’re caught.
