Here is another example of why it’s so important to shred your mail and protect your identity.

Phoenix Police Sgt. Darren Burch said thieves used a victim’s personal information to go on a big Christmas shopping spree. It happened on Dec. 16 and 17, 2012.

“They opened a Macy’s account and bought more than $14,000 worth of merchandise at the Chandler location,” he said. “They did the same exact fraud at the Macy’s at Paradise Valley Mall, when they purchased more than $4,400 worth of jewelry and handbags.”

While the victim tried to clean-up the mess made of her credit report, the thieves, two women and a man, are enjoying the spoils of their crimes. The trio got away both times in a white four-door passenger car.

Our next case brought total strangers together in a most violent way.

“This is scary,” said Burch. “This was Saturday, Feb. 2, 2013 just after 10:30 a.m. when both a 16-year-old boy and a 22-year-old man were shot at a bus stop at 7th Street and Indian School.”

Both victims survived. Neither knew each other or the shooter.

“There’s no apparent reason for the shooting. The suspect shot them and fled on foot,” said Burch.

There was a man on a bicycle next to the shooter when it happened. He left as well. It’s not known if the two know each other, but in any case the man is a witness and investigators would like to talk to him.
