These are two different crimes with two similar outcomes — misdemeanor shoplifting that turns into armed robbery.

In our first case, Phoenix Police Sergeant Darren Burch said a man walked into the CVS Pharmacy at 16th Street and Baseline and grabbed some liquour bottles from the cooler.

It was Monday, November 21, 2011 just after 7:00 p.m.

“As the suspect headed toward the exit without paying, the clerk stopped him,” said Burch. “That’s when the man hit the clerk over the head with one of the bottles and fled the store”.

The clerk was knocked flat, but he’s okay now.

Our second case happened on Wednesday, December 28, 2011, just before 7:00 p.m.

A man inside the Cabela’s at Glendale and Loop 101 grabbed some ammunition and put it in his pockets.

Sgt. Burch said the employees caught him and took him to a backroom for processing while they waited for police to show-up.

“That’s when the suspect pulled a gun, pointed it at the employees and told them he was leaving,” said Burch.

And he did. So now, instead of a citation, he’s facing felony armed robbery charges.
