Phoenix tops all US cities in net migration of seniors

PHOENIX — The Phoenix metro area was recognized as a runaway winner in a new study of top retirement destinations for seniors.
The study by MagnifyMoney.com looked at net migration of seniors and included Phoenix, Mesa and Scottsdale in its description of the metro area.
Experiencing a positive net migration of over 7,000, the Phoenix area outpaced the second-place Tampa metro area by more than 1,000 new people.
The Tampa-metro posted a positive net migration of nearly 6,000, while the third-place North Port-Sarasota-Badenton area in Florida recorded 5,750 new residents.
Six of the top 10 cities in the study are in Florida. Arizona and Florida combined accounted for 15 of the top 25 cities in the study.
The Lake Havasu City-Kingman area ranked No. 9 overall with a positive net migration of 3,104.
Tucson also ranked in the top 20 coming in at No. 17 with a net migration of 2,388.

Aside from weather and low costs of living in Arizona and Florida, both states were described as having retiree-friendly tax laws.
Los Angeles, Chicago and New York City all saw the biggest influx of negative net migration.
Los Angeles lost 8,332 people, Chicago lost 8,497 people and New York City lost a whopping 15,376 people.
