PHOENIX – A groundbreaking ceremony on a state-of-the-art, $300 million senior community concept in east Mesa was held Tuesday.

Mesa Mayor John Giles called Grande Vita, located on Crismon Road north of the U.S. 60, “the future of senior living.”

“It allows folks from my generation to, quote-unquote, age in place,” he said during the ceremony.

The 20-acre campus will feature independent and assisted living centers, hotel rooms, dining options, medical offices, luxury condos, a nursing school and a rehab clinic.

The city said in a press release the development will create an estimated 476 jobs and $38.6 million dollars in wages.

Khangura Development is partnering with BioCity Enterprises on the project, which will be built by Brycon Construction.

BioCity COO Kelly Copeland said the health care industry for seniors is “in chaos,” and Grande Vita is designed to transform it.

“We’re doing something called ‘age in place,’ which is a new concept where you actually stay where you’re at and age; as you go up, services just increase,” he said.

The campus will be around 800,000 square feet, anchored by a 12-story independent living complex, Copeland said.

Construction is expected to take three years, with the first year dedicated to building three three-story underground parking garages.

“So we have to go down before we go up,” Copeland said.

We want to hear from you.
