In an effort to belittle our workout routines, new research says that all those hours at the gym have not reduced our obesity problem in America.
According to the Los Angeles Times, researchers at the University of Washington’s Institute for Health Metrics and Evaluation has found that despite an increase in physical activity, the obesity rate in the U.S. has not gone down.
Today, more than one-third of U.S. adults and approximately 17% of children are obese, according to the federal Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
Researches found the increase in physical activity occurred in counties that were in the deep South.
Overall, six of the 10 counties that improved most for men and seven of the 10 that improved most for women are in Kentucky. Counties around Atlanta, Los Angeles, San Francisco, San Diego, Houston and Denver also saw major improvements, according to the report.
If you’re asking yourself what the proper amount of time should be dedicated to physical activity, researchers said that a little more than two hours a week was enough if done in moderation, or at least more than an hour if the physical activity is done vigorously.
