A recent study shows that the missing calories in diet soda may be adding to health problems.
According to The Chart, Purdue University reviewed a dozen studies that have been published within the last five years researching the health effects diet soda has on the body.
After their research, they published an opinion piece explaining their feelings about the outcome. The reports author, Susan Swithers said:
“Honestly, I thought that diet soda would be marginally better compared to regular soda in terms of health, but in reality it has a counterintuitive effect.”
The artificial sweeteners in diet soda trick the body into believing the sweet craving has been satisfied but it then craves more sugar. When the cravings for real sugar have been satisfied with cake or cookies, the body is unsure how to process real sugar.
The study also showed that diet soda drinkers weigh more than those who don’t drink diet.
Even natural sweeteners may cause increased health risks. When it comes to sugar substitutes, dietitians said to limit consumption.
