PHOENIX — Three Tempe residents were invited to interview for a vacant seat on the Tempe City Council session during a work study session on Tuesday.

The session will be held at 4 p.m. at the City Council Chambers in Tempe.

Narrowed from a total of 49 residents who applied for the position, the three finalists chosen were Don Cassano, Arlene Chin and Shereen Lerner. All three finalists have been residents of Tempe for more than 43 years.

Cassano was a former member of the Tempe City Council from 1984 to 1993. In response to an application question to why he would want to serve on the council, the former Vice Mayor said, “I have continued to keep myself informed, involved and up to date on matters impacting Tempe. I will quickly become a contributing member of the city council.”

Chin, who grew up in Tempe, is an administrator at the ASU Foundation and has served on the Mayor’s Youth Advisory Commission, Tempe Human Relations Commission and the Tempe Neighborhood Advisory Commission.

Lerner is a member of the city’s Complete Count Committee for the 2020 U.S. Census and the Tempe Parks, Recreation, Golf and Double Butte Cemetery Advisory Board. She is also a faculty member at Mesa Community College.

The final selection will be made at the May 9 City Council Meeting where the appointee will be sworn in. They will serve through July 2020.

Former Council member Kolby Granville was removed by a unanimous vote after the city investigated claims that he provided alcohol for two former female students at Tempe Preparatory Academy, where he worked as a teacher.

One of the accusers also alleged that he sexually assaulted her after she graduated from the charter school.

Granville was fired from his teaching job in December 2017, a month before the allegations were made public.

We want to hear from you.
