PHOENIX — Some voters in Phoenix will start to receive ballots in the mail Wednesday to elect two city council members in the May runoff election.

The early voting ballots were mailed out to voters in Districts 5 and 8 on the Permanent Early Voting List, approximately 117,000 voters total.

Those voters will elect either Betty Guardado or Vania Guevara to replace Daniel Valenzuela and Carlos Garcia or Mike Johnson to replace Kate Gallego.

Both Valenzuela and Gallego resigned last year to run for mayor.

The runoff election was triggered in March, when none of the candidates got the majority of the vote.

Voters can mail in their ballots ahead of the May 21 election or can turn them in weekdays on the 15th floor of City Hall through May 17.

The city will also open up 11 early voting centers on May 18 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.; May 20 from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m.; and May 21 from 6 a.m. to 7 p.m.

Voters who are not on the early voting list can request a mail-in ballot by May 10 or vote in person at City Hall. Ballots must be received by 7 p.m. Election Day.

Residents can exchange ballots that are damaged or spoiled at City Hall or by calling 602-261-VOTE (8683).

The candidate who is elected to the District 5 seat will serve until April 29, 2021, while the District 8 candidate will serve until April 17, 2023.

More information about the election can be found on the city’s website.
