Wrong-way driver takes off after fatal wreck on I-17 north of Phoenix

Apr 22, 2019, 5:55 AM | Updated: 8:28 am

PHOENIX – Authorities said one person was killed and two others were injured in a multivehicle wrong-way crash early Monday on Interstate 17 north of Phoenix.

The driver who caused the northbound wreck near Sunset Point sped away from the 12:30 a.m. accident, witnesses told the Arizona Department of Public Safety.

A spokesman for the department said witnesses told troopers that a black Mustang was driving against traffic near milepost 256. Another car dodged the black car but hit an embankment in the median and wound up back on the freeway, where it was hit broadside by a third car.

Another car smashed into the guard rail but the driver took off. A commercial vehicle was struck by debris.

The driver of the second car was pronounced dead at the scene. Two passengers in that car were taken to a hospital. They were expected to survive.

The lanes were closed for more than four hours, reopening around 5 a.m., according to the Arizona Department of Transportation.

No other details were immediately available.
