PHOENIX – Arizona State University is partnering with a charter school network on an outreach program to help guide students on a path toward college.
The partnership between ASU and Great Hearts Academies is starting at the Maryvale Prep campus, which opened on Camelback Road near 51st Avenue in Phoenix in 2012.
“We felt it was a good opportunity for all of us to collaborate in this partnership where we all create a college-going culture within the Maryvale Prep community,” Marcelino Quinonez, ASU director of educational outreach and partnerships, told KTAR News 92.3 FM on Thursday.
As part of the outreach, Quinonez said the school’s parents were invited to ASU’s American Dream Academy, which teaches strategies for promoting the idea of going to college in an eight-week program.
“And at the end, the parents actually graduate from American Dream Academy, so it’s a way for them to model a graduation for their children,” he said.
ASU will also provide programs to give Maryvale Prep students exposure to college life.
Maryvale Prep, which serves more than 600 students in kindergarten through ninth grade, is one of 29 Great Hearts charter schools in metro Phoenix and Texas.
“We’ve already began to implement the partnership by promoting the programs and engaging the parents and inviting them to take part in the events,” Quinonez said.
