PHOENIX — A former officer with the Phoenix Police Department was arrested this week for allegedly molesting his half-sister more than a decade ago.
Michael Mason, 28, was arrested on Wednesday for allegedly committing sexual conduct with his then-kindergarten age sister, Sgt. Vince Lewis said in a Thursday email.
Mason resigned shortly before he was arrested.
Mason was in high school at the time of the alleged crime, which was believed to have occurred 12 years ago. The victim, now 17, told police about the incident in March.
According to ABC15, Mason admitted to inappropriately touching the girl while baby-sitting her.
Police Chief Jeri Williams said in a statement that she was “shocked and appalled” to hear of the details of the investigation.
“I am confident in the investigative process, as well as the current stringent hiring and background investigation process under my watch as police chief,” she added.
“It is incumbent upon our organization to review these processes to ensure we are making every effort to detect and address these types of incidents.”
Mason was hired as a civilian employee in 2011 and had worked as an officer for about three years.
Mason has been booked into jail on one count of sexual conduct with a minor.
