PHOENIX — U.S. Sen. Martha McSally said she was not happy with her party leader’s decision to block a resolution urging the release of special counsel Robert Mueller’s report into Russian interference in the 2016 election.
“I’m disappointed with that,” McSally told KTAR News 92.3 FM’s Arizona Morning News on Tuesday, referring to Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell’s move to block the request a day earlier.
“I think it’s important that after two years of what we’ve been through here that the American people see to the max intent possible, by law, everything from the report and how the conclusions came about.”
McConnell objected to a resolution from Senate Democratic Leader Chuck Schumer urging the public release of the report.
Schumer said Monday that since President Donald Trump supports releasing the report, “there’s no good reason for anyone to object.”
But McConnell argued that the Justice Department needs more time to wrap up Mueller’s two-year probe.
Attorney General William Barr’s summary of the report concluded Mueller did not find evidence that President Donald Trump’s campaign “conspired or coordinated” with Russia to influence the 2016 presidential election.
It also reached no conclusion on whether Trump obstructed justice.
McSally said that the news of the summary, which was released Sunday, has only divided the country more.
“If the Russians’ actual objective — which we know they meddled in our election — was to sow discord in our country, boy, they achieved their objective,” McSally said.
“It’s time for us to move on, move forward, unify and focus on the things that matter to Arizonans and Americans. So let’s make it as public as possible and move forward for the future.”
